Pefferlaw host GIANT Vegetable Competition

Sept 26, 2010

Pefferlaw Peat Products had the pleasure of hosting the 2nd Annual Achievement Day for the 4-H & Georgina-Brock's - Giant Vegetable Competition

Youth group. 20 Youth competed for largest and tallest Giants grown in several categories, the highlight being a 695 lb. pumpkin grown by teen-age Mitchell Fisher. Mitchell emerged the winner after a grueling battle of the pumpkin (pictured below).  Several youths alternately took the lead through out the season.  The season started with Kyle in the lead, however his pumpkin grew on top of the vine and died an unfortunate early death. Graham’s pumpkin grew too fast gaining 18-20 lbs a day, till it ultimately split open at 350 lbs, Daniel and Abbi Shier’s donkey snacked on their pumpkins before they were harvested, however they were still able to enter them minus a few pounds with the formidable weights of between 400-500 lbs.

The youth were able to achieve their goals under the guidance of Norm Craven, and the support of 4H leader Dorothy Shier and assistants Chris and Tracy Shier. Norm is an avid competitor and world record holder of several Giant competitions.   We would like to thank all of them for their experience and dedication to the youth and in making this a memorable event. Pefferlaw was proud to donate growth materials in support of this competition and looks forward to hosting next years event. There were over 108 entries in total.
